Jammu and Kashmir

The first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections is taking place today, marking the region's first election in 10 years since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. In this phase, 24 constituencies across seven districts will vote to elect members of the 90-seat assembly. Over 2.3 million voters, including over 566,000 youth, will choose from 219 candidates, including 90 independents.

Polling will be held under tight security, with over 3,000 polling stations set up and 14,000 staff deployed. Constituencies from both the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley will vote, with eight seats in Jammu and 16 in Kashmir. The election is being conducted in three phases, with the second and third phases scheduled for September 25 and October 1. Results will be announced on October 8. The elections are significant, being the first after the Supreme Court's ruling to allow voting in the region after a decade of direct rule by New Delhi.
A pink polling booth, manned fully by women, has been set up in Kishtwar district. Seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir, located on either side of the Pir Panjal mountain range, will vote for the first time in an assembly election in 10 years as the stage is set for phase 1 polling in the union territory today.
