Jaishankar Raises San Francisco Consulate Attack Issue During U.S. Visit: Calls for Accountability, Not Sympathy

Jaishankar

During his U.S. visit, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar raised the issue of the attack on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco in 2023.

Speaking on January 22, Jaishankar demanded action against those responsible for the attack, emphasizing that India seeks accountability rather than mere expressions of sympathy.

Jaishankar made these remarks shortly after his meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The minister is in the U.S. to attend the inauguration ceremony of Donald Trump as the 47th President.

San Francisco Attack: India’s Firm Response

The Indian Consulate in San Francisco was targeted twice in 2023 by Khalistani supporters. In March 2023, these groups vandalized the consulate, damaged property, assaulted Indian officials, and even attempted to set the consulate on fire using flammable materials.

Protesters also broke security barricades and carried Khalistani flags inside the premises. A second attack occurred in July 2023, when Khalistani supporters again tried to torch the consulate. Although no significant damage was reported, the repeated incidents created fear among Indian officials working there.

Jaishankar’s Message to U.S. Authorities

Jaishankar expressed India’s concern over the attacks and pressed for strong action against the perpetrators. He stated, "India does not want mere sympathy but concrete steps to ensure the safety of its diplomatic missions and personnel."

He urged U.S. authorities to not only arrest those responsible but also implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The U.S. has assured India that investigations are underway and security for the consulate will be enhanced. Broader Diplomatic Discussions Apart from raising the consulate attacks, Jaishankar held discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio on other pressing issues, including delays in visa processing.

He highlighted how visa backlogs affect trade, tourism, and bilateral ties. Jaishankar also touched upon topics related to Bangladesh but refrained from disclosing detailed information.

Strengthening India-U.S. Relations

While praising the strong ties between India and the U.S., Jaishankar noted that incidents like the consulate attacks are concerning for bilateral relations. He urged the U.S. to take such matters seriously and ensure the safety of Indian diplomatic missions.

This visit underscores India’s firm stance on ensuring the safety of its citizens and diplomatic staff abroad, as well as its commitment to fostering stronger relations with the United States.
