"It is regrettable..." India reacts to burning down of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's residence, know more

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

After a mob in Dhaka destroyed the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh and father of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, India has since expressed regret and strongly condemned the act of vandalism.

Key Details:

The Incident: A mob in Dhaka destroyed the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Protesters reportedly stormed the building with shovels and hammers, set it on fire, and razed parts of it to the ground with a crane and excavator.

India's Response: India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the destruction, calling it regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh, was destroyed.

The MEA emphasized the importance of the residence to the national consciousness of Bangladesh and stated that the act of vandalism should be strongly condemned.

Bangladesh's Reaction:Bangladesh lodged a protest with India over "false and fabricated comments" by Hasina, who is currently in India, deeming them a "hostile act".

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry conveyed "deep concern, disappointment and serious reservation" to the Indian government, stating that Hasina's statements are hurting the sentiments of the people in Bangladesh and are not conducive to a healthy relationship between the two countries.

Context: The mob attack followed calls from Hasina for her supporters to stand up against the interim government in Dhaka. Protesters torched and tore down parts of the residence after calls in social media to demolish what they called a "pilgrimage site of fascism".

Hasina responded by saying, "They can demolish a building, but not the history… but they must also remember that history takes its revenge".

Other incidents: Violent demonstrators also demolished houses of Awami League leaders and defaced murals of Mujibur Rahman.
