Iranian Woman Strips in Protest Against Strict Dress Code at University, Detained by Authorities

Iranian woman detained after stripping in protest against strict dress code at university, highlighting growing opposition to mandatory hijab laws

Iranian Woman

A young woman reportedly stripped down to her underwear at an Iranian university on Saturday, seemingly protesting Iran’s strict dress code. Videos circulating on social media show security personnel at the Islamic Azad University detaining the woman, whose identity remains undisclosed. According to university spokesperson Amir Mahjob, authorities claimed that she was under severe mental stress and suffered from a mental disorder.

However, social media reactions suggest her actions may have been a deliberate protest. Lei La, a user on X, commented, “For most women, being in public in their underwear is a nightmare… This act reflects frustration with the authorities' insistence on mandatory hijab.”

The woman’s current status is unclear, but Hamshahri, a prominent Iranian newspaper, reported that she may be transferred to a mental hospital after further investigation. Her protest comes amid growing defiance from Iranian women against the hijab mandate, particularly following the September 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman who died in custody after allegedly violating hijab regulations, sparking nationwide protests that were later suppressed by security forces.
