Internet suspended in Udaipur, as communal tension erupts, after stabbing attack on student
The Udaipur administration suspended internet services for 24 hours on Friday following violent clashes sparked by an incident in which a Class 10 student was allegedly stabbed by a classmate at a government school in the city. The decision to suspend services was made to maintain law and order, according to a notification from the divisional commissioner’s office.
The incident occurred in the morning when a fight broke out between two students, resulting in one student being stabbed in the thigh with a knife. Udaipur District Collector Arvind Poswal stated that the injured student was immediately taken to the hospital, where he is now in stable condition. The attacker and his father have been arrested, and authorities are investigating whether others were involved.
Following the stabbing, communal tensions escalated, leading to the imposition of prohibitory orders banning public gatherings in Udaipur. Right-wing groups called for a shutdown of shops in the market area, and a mob subsequently set vehicles on fire and threw stones. However, officials have since brought the situation under control.
Udaipur's Superintendent of Police, Yogesh Goyal, confirmed that additional police forces have been deployed to maintain peace, and the accused has been detained. In a video statement, District Collector Poswal reassured residents that the injured student is receiving the best possible care and urged the public not to spread or believe in rumors. He expressed confidence that the situation would normalize soon.
Local authorities, including Udaipur Rural MLA Phool Singh Meena, have stated that the situation is now under control.
