Indian Railways to Install 7.5 Million AI-Powered CCTV Cameras for Enhanced Safety
In a major step towards passenger safety, Indian Railways will install approximately 7.5 million AI-powered CCTV cameras in trains, as announced by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. These cameras will be placed not only in coaches but also in locomotive engines to alert the loco pilot. The move aims to strengthen safety systems, especially amid increasing train accidents.
Minister Vaishnaw revealed that the AI-equipped CCTV cameras, to be installed in around 40,000 coaches, 14,000 locomotives, and 6,000 EMUs, will cost approximately ₹15,000 crore. These cameras will detect suspicious objects on the tracks and alert the loco pilot to apply emergency brakes if necessary.
Railway Board Chairperson Jaya Verma Sinha stated that AI-powered cameras will be installed in key yards and at critical points to prevent accidents. She also mentioned plans to enhance security during the 2025 Kumbh Mela, with 900 special trains to be operated and significant infrastructure upgrades at Prayagraj Junction, which is part of the Amrit Bharat Station scheme.
During Kumbh Mela, track security will be closely monitored to prevent damage by antisocial elements. The upcoming event is expected to see over 30 crore pilgrims, and Indian Railways is planning detailed crowd management strategies to handle emergencies effectively.
