In the first innings, Daryl Mitchell hit a century to guide New Zealand to 273 all out against India in Sunday’s top-of-the-table World Cup clash between two unbeaten teams. New Zealand had lost their openers early after being invited to bat first in the Himalayan hill town of Dharamsala but Mitchell (130) and Rachin Ravindra (75) put on 159 to get the innings back on track.
Fast bowler Mohammed Shami helped India pull things back in the final 10 overs as he returned figures of 5-54 in his first appearance at the tournament.
After winning the toss, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma decided to field first in the 21st match between India and New Zealand at ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 in the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on 22 October.
Batting first, New Zealand managed to score 273 runs after losing all their wickets, all thanks to Mohd Shami’s 5-wickets haul, 2 wickets by Kuldeep Yadav, and one each by Bumrah and Siraj. India need 274 runs to wins the match.
Despite a slow start and losing early wickets, New Zealand’s Rachin (75) and Mitchell (130) built a good partnership. However, post 200 runs, they kept losing wickets and by the end of 50 overs, they lost all their wickets.
Virat Kohli smashed 95(104) and fiercely led India to a memorable win. This victory over Newzeland in an ICC event came after 20 years we last beated them in 2003 in an ICC. Newzeland smashed 274 runs in the 1st innings with the help of terrific innings of Daryl Mitchel and Rachin Ravindra. Mohammed Shami was the hero for the Indian bowling lineup taking 5 wicket haul after his comeback in to the playing 11.

India responded with aggressive batting as they came out to chase the target of 274 runs. Rohit Sharma (46) and Shubhman Gill set the tone for the run chase, with a 71-run opening stand. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, the duo who scripted a successful run chase against Australia, are in the middle.
A glimmer of hope had emerged for the Kiwis between 33rd and 34th over. KL Rahul was dismissed by Mitchell Santner, breaking his 50-run partnership with Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav was run out subsequently, at a score of only 2 runs. After a brief fumble, however, India regained its dominance in the match with a 68-run partnership between Jadeja and Kohli. Virat was dismissed on score of 95 in the 48th over and missed his well deserved century by just 5 runs , although that 95 runs were not less that a century.
The Rohit Sharma-led side is at the top of the points table, with a total of 10 points. They have won all the five matches played so far. New Zealand is at the second position, with 8 points (4 wins in 5 matches), followed by South Africa at third spot with 6 points and Australia at the fourth position with 4 points. The top four teams would qualify into the semi-finals.
