India Secures Second Spot in Generative AI App Downloads, ChatGPT most downloaded

New Delhi – India has secured the second spot globally in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) app downloads for the calendar year 2024 (CY24), according to data from Sensor Tower. The country recorded 177 million GenAI app downloads, accounting for 11.8% of the global total of 1,490 million.
The United States led the rankings with 200 million downloads, while China came third with 133 million.
Rapid Growth in India’s GenAI App Downloads
India witnessed a staggering 135% increase in GenAI app downloads, rising from 75.2 million in CY23 to 177 million in CY24. By contrast, the US saw a relatively modest 49% growth, from 135 million downloads in CY23 to 200 million in CY24.
India Trails in In-App Revenue
Despite impressive download numbers, India lags significantly in revenue generated from in-app purchases. In CY24, India earned just $12.8 million from GenAI apps, contributing a mere 1% of global revenues. However, this marked a 135% growth compared to $4.6 million in CY23.
In contrast, the US dominated with $558 million in revenues, accounting for 40% of the global total, followed by the UK ($55.1 million), Germany ($53 million), Japan ($44 million), and Canada ($36.9 million). China ranked 10th with $28.8 million in revenues.
India’s Performance in AI Subcategories
AI Chatbot Apps: In Q4CY24, India led globally with 44.2 million downloads in this category, capturing 10% of the total 427 million downloads. China (43.6 million) and the US (43.2 million) followed closely.
AI Art Generators: India accounted for 24.5% of global downloads in this segment, with 84.8 million total downloads worldwide.
Rising Popularity of AI Apps
AI-related apps are gaining tremendous traction in India. In CY24, over 3 billion apps referencing AI in their names, subtitles, or descriptions were downloaded across Google Play and iOS, representing 12.3% of India’s total app downloads (23.4 billion).
This figure marked a significant rise from 2.3 billion downloads in CY23. Globally, 17 billion AI-related apps were downloaded, accounting for 13% of total downloads.
Most Popular AI Apps in India
ChatGPT emerged as the most downloaded AI app in India, followed by Google’s Gemini. Whatsauto ranked fourth, while Microsoft Copilot secured the 10th spot.
Other prominent apps belonged to the AI art generation category. India's growing adoption of AI apps reflects the country's rapid embrace of emerging technologies. However, the nation still has significant ground to cover in monetizing this adoption, as in-app revenues remain a fraction of global earnings.
