India’s First ‘Made in India’ Chip to Launch This Year: confirms Union Minister

India's first 'Made-in-India' chip will be launched this year, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced during the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.
Originally scheduled for launch in December 2024, the chip’s release has been expedited, marking a significant milestone for the country's semiconductor ambitions.
Speaking at the WEF, Vaishnaw highlighted the growing confidence of global industries in India's semiconductor program. He said, "Our first 'Made-in-India' chip will be launched this year. We are now focusing on the next phase, which involves bringing equipment manufacturers, material producers, and designers to India."
Transformative Changes in Materials and Technology
The minister emphasized the need for high-quality materials in semiconductor manufacturing, stating, "The transition from precision in millions to billions of parts per component is a significant shift. This requires major advancements in the industry, and we are making rapid progress in this direction."
India's Semiconductor Ambitions
To bolster its semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem, Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Semicon India Program in December 2021. The program allocates ₹76,000 crore to support companies investing in semiconductor manufacturing, display fabrication, and design ecosystems.
Additionally, the government has established the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), operating as an independent business division under the Digital India Corporation. This mission focuses on creating and implementing long-term strategies for semiconductor manufacturing in India.
Attracting Foreign Investments
India's semiconductor industry is also drawing significant interest from global investors:
NXP Semiconductors plans to double its R&D investments in India, committing over $1 billion.
Analog Devices has partnered with Tata Group to advance semiconductor manufacturing in India.
Micron Technology is setting up a $2.75 billion assembly and testing plant in Gujarat, expected to generate 5,000 direct and 15,000 indirect jobs.
India's Rapidly Growing Semiconductor Market
According to a Reuters report, India’s semiconductor market is projected to reach $63 billion by 2026.
Strengthening India's Global Position
The launch of the 'Made-in-India' chip will solidify India’s position in the global semiconductor industry. This initiative not only aims to boost domestic manufacturing but also represents a significant step toward establishing India as a global semiconductor hub.
The announcement underscores India's ambition to become a major player in cutting-edge technology, bridging the gap between innovation and self-reliance. The year 2025 promises to be a defining moment for the nation’s technological aspirations.
