In Begusarai, DM Tushar Singla Held Hostage by Angry Crowd, Freed After Police Intervention

Police

A tense situation unfolded in Bihar’s Begusarai district when District Magistrate (DM) Tushar Singla was held hostage by a crowd protesting an anti-encroachment drive near Lohia Nagar Ghumti on Thursday. The standoff lasted for nearly two hours, prompting the deployment of police forces from over half a dozen stations to rescue the DM.

The Incident

The confrontation began around 11:30 AM when the district administration and railway officials arrived with police forces and JCB machines to clear encroachments from railway land. The area, home to about 150 makeshift settlements, has been occupied for several years by marginalized communities.

When residents learned that the DM was inspecting a nearby museum, they quickly surrounded the premises and blocked the main entrance. Their primary demand was a guarantee of alternative housing arrangements before the eviction process proceeded.

Protest Escalates

The protesters, mostly women, accused the administration of ignoring their plight and demanded immediate intervention. "Where will we go with our children? The government must provide us with alternative arrangements before evicting us," said Neetu Devi, one of the protestors. Another protester voiced frustration against the government, saying, "They ask for votes during elections but abandon us when we need them. Neither Modi nor Nitish cares about where we will live."

Police and Administration Respond

Upon receiving information about the incident, senior officials, including SP Yogendra Kumar and SDM Rajeev Kumar, rushed to the spot with additional police forces. The situation turned the area into a virtual police encampment as authorities negotiated with the agitated crowd.

After considerable effort, the officials convinced the protesters to disperse, and the DM was escorted to safety. Railways and local authorities decided to temporarily halt the anti-encroachment drive to avoid further escalation.

Official Statement

A senior official downplayed the incident, stating, "There was no hostage situation. The residents had grievances, and we have listened to their concerns. Steps will be taken to address their issues appropriately."

Background

The eviction notice, issued earlier by the railway administration, had sparked widespread discontent among the settlers, who have lived in the area for decades. The residents, primarily from economically weaker sections, argue that they have no alternative shelter and demand relocation before eviction.

Next Steps

The administration has assured the affected families that their concerns will be reviewed, and a resolution will be sought. However, the incident has highlighted the challenges of balancing infrastructure projects with the rights and welfare of displaced communities.

This high-profile standoff has sparked debates on governance and the handling of marginalized communities during eviction drives, putting the spotlight on the need for humane and inclusive solutions.
