In a surprise move, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called for a national election on July 4. In an address to the country outside 10 Downing Street, Sunak said it was “the moment for Britain to choose its future” as he claimed the Tories could be trusted to lead the country during a time of global instability.

It was drizzling at the time of PM Rishi Sunak making the announcement. It is learnt that Sunak’s words were met with alarm by senior Tories, because they are concerned that their party is trailing 20 percentage points behind Labour in the polls.

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer is widely expected to become the next prime minister after he transformed party since its historic election defeat almost five years ago.

There are experts who believe that Sunak decided to name the date after claiming the economy was improving. Sunak believes that inflation is easing out and net migration figures are also helping the situation.
