HMPV Outbreak, Health Minister Assures Full Preparedness for Any Emergency Situation

No Need to Panic Over HMP Virus, Study on Symptoms and Effects Underway: Health Minister
Raipur, 7 January 2025: The Health Department of Chhattisgarh is fully prepared to tackle the emerging threat of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), also referred to as the HMP virus. In light of the recent detection of cases in some parts of the country, Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jayaswal chaired a crucial meeting with senior officials of the health department at the state secretariat in Nawa Raipur.
During the meeting, he provided important guidelines and directives on how to manage the situation. Minister Jayaswal reassured the public, stating that the health department has been continuously monitoring the HMPV virus through a dedicated team of experts who are studying its symptoms and effects.
He emphasized that the department has been on high alert ever since the COVID-19 pandemic and is fully equipped to handle any kind of emergency. "There's no need to panic about this virus. It has been reported previously, and we are taking all necessary precautions. The department’s team is constantly keeping a watch on its spread and impact, and our primary goal is to prevent its transmission while educating the public on how to stay safe," Minister Jayaswal said.
He urged citizens to prioritize hygiene and cleanliness, which remain essential preventive measures against the virus.
Precautions to Take Against HMP Virus
According to health experts, preventing the spread of the HMPV virus requires basic health precautions: Avoid crowded places and maintain social distancing. Stay away from individuals exhibiting cold, cough, or fever symptoms.
Get checked at a local hospital if you experience symptoms such as cold, cough, or fever, to avoid complications. Cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief or tissue while coughing or sneezing. Wash hands regularly with soap or use a sanitizer.
Stay home if you're feeling unwell, drink plenty of water, and consume nutritious food to strengthen your immunity. What Not to Do Health officials also outlined critical precautions to avoid further spreading the virus: Do not reuse tissue papers or napkins after use. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth frequently, especially with unwashed hands. Do not spit in public spaces. Avoid self-medication without consulting a doctor if you have symptoms like cold, cough, or fever.
Understanding HMPV and Its Symptoms
HMPV is primarily spread through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or even through handshakes or close contact. The virus can also spread if you touch contaminated surfaces and then touch your face. The most common symptoms of the virus include cold, cough, fever, and in some cases, difficulty in breathing.
During the winter season, these symptoms are more pronounced. In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia and bronchitis. Since reports of HMPV cases have emerged from several states, the Chhattisgarh Health Department has swiftly activated its preparedness plan. Experts suggest that while HMPV is a common respiratory virus, it is more prevalent during the colder months and generally causes mild to moderate respiratory symptoms.
In conclusion, Minister Jayaswal assured that the Chhattisgarh Health Department is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Public cooperation and adherence to safety guidelines remain essential to prevent the spread of this virus.
