HMPV Cases in Karnataka: CM Siddaramaiah and Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao Assure Public

HMPV

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah addressed the detection of two Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in children, emphasizing the government’s readiness to tackle the situation.

“It has been found in two children. I have spoken with Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who has held a meeting with the health department. The government will implement any necessary precautions and document this disease,” Siddaramaiah said.

Health Minister's Statement

State Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reassured the public, explaining that HMPV is a flu virus causing common respiratory issues. “This is not a new or unknown virus. The symptoms include respiratory problems and cold. The child with HMPV symptoms is recovering and will be discharged tomorrow. There is no need to panic,” he stated.

Gundu Rao also clarified that the cases have no link to international travel and no emergency has been declared. “We are consulting our expert panel and will coordinate with the Government of India and ICMR. These are regular flu symptoms, and as of now, there is no serious cause for concern,” he added.

ICMR’s Findings

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) identified the two cases through routine surveillance for respiratory viral pathogens. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has confirmed that HMPV is already in circulation globally, including in India, and that there has been no unusual surge in respiratory illnesses like Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI).

Key Information

Cases Identified: Two children in Karnataka. Symptoms: Mild respiratory illness; no international travel history.

Response: Monitoring by state government, discussions with ICMR, and public health advisories.

Public Reassurance Officials urged calm, emphasizing that the situation is under control.

With ongoing surveillance and precautionary measures, authorities assured that HMPV currently poses no significant threat. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
