Himachal govt employees not paid salaries, "..brink of bankruptcy.." alleges BJP
On Government employees in Himachal Pradesh not being paid their salaries, BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan says, "... The Congress government in Himachal has plunged the state into financial ruin and brink of bankruptcy. Like an unreliable, unsafe and precarious leaky boat, the Congress government, with its reckless, false promises it made to the people during elections has now sunk the state and the future of its people into despair and darkness. But one needs to ask, why is the Gandhi family quiet? We all know, we have read in papers from time to time that they go to Shimla and Himachal Pradesh for a vacation or for a holiday. But now, why have they abandoned the good people of Himachal Pradesh? Why is he (Rahul Gandhi) maintaining such a steely and studied silence..."
It is for the first time in Himachal Pradesh's history, that the state's 200,000 employees and 150,000 pensioners did not receive their salaries and pensions on the 1st of the month. This issue has arisen due to the current economic crisis affecting the state, which is having a detrimental impact on the lives of employees and pensioners.
Himachal Pradesh is currently burdened with a massive debt of approximately ₹94,000 crore. This financial strain has severely weakened the state's fiscal condition, forcing the government to take on new loans to repay old debts. The state government owes nearly ₹10,000 crore to employees and pensioners. The inability to make these payments has led to significant criticism of the government, with no immediate resolution in sight.
It is worth noting that during the 2022 elections, the Congress party made several major promises to secure power. Since coming into office, substantial expenditures have been made to fulfill these promises. Currently, about 40% of the Himachal government’s budget is allocated to salaries and pensions, and approximately 20% goes towards debt and interest payments.
