Hema Committee report jolts Malayalam film industry, 17-member AMMA resigns
The Justice Hema Committee report has exposed deep-rooted issues within the Malayalam film industry, revealing alarming instances of sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and unethical work conditions, particularly affecting female actors. Following the release of the report on August 19, 2024, which had been submitted to the Kerala government in December 2019, a wave of allegations has emerged, as several actors have come forward to share their experiences of abuse by colleagues in the industry.
The three-member Justice Hema Committee, established in 2017 in response to a petition by the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), was tasked with investigating the systemic issues of sexual harassment and gender inequality in the Malayalam film industry. The committee, led by retired High Court Justice K. Hema, former actor Sharada, and retired IAS officer K.B. Valsala Kumari, found pervasive misconduct within the industry, prompting significant fallout.
In the aftermath of the report, a junior artiste accused actor and director Baburaj of rape, stating that she was lured to his home under false pretenses and then sexually assaulted. Baburaj, who serves as the Joint Secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Actors (AMMA), denied the allegations and announced plans to take legal action against his accuser. Another actor accused senior actor Siddique of raping her when she was young, leading Siddique to resign as the general secretary of AMMA.
Actor Minu Muneer also came forward, alleging sexual misconduct by various actors, including a former CPI(M) legislator. She named actors Mukesh, Jayasurya, Maniyanpilla Raju, and Edavela Babu, who is a prominent leader of AMMA. Muneer’s accusations highlighted the extent of the problem and her forced relocation from the Malayalam film industry to Chennai due to these experiences.
These revelations have led to a significant shake-up within the industry, including the resignation of the entire 17-member executive committee of AMMA, including its president, superstar actor Mohanlal, on August 27, 2024. The scandal has brought to light the darker side of an industry often praised for its progressive content but plagued by deeply entrenched issues of sexism and abuse.
