Heavy Rain, Strong Winds Hit Odisha and Bengal as Cyclone Dana Makes Landfall

Cyclone Dana brings heavy rain and strong winds to Odisha and West Bengal as it makes landfall, with lakhs of people evacuated and rescue efforts underway.

Cyclone Dana

Cyclone Dana made landfall on the Odisha coast, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to several regions, particularly between Bhitarkanika in Kendrapara district and Dhamra in Bhadrak district. The storm, named by Qatar, hit with wind speeds reaching 110 km/h. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the landfall process began around midnight, affecting the coastal districts of Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore, and Jagatsinghpur with intense rainfall and high winds. The IMD also forecasted that the storm would gradually weaken into a cyclonic storm by noon.

The cyclone has caused widespread disruption, uprooting trees and damaging property. In Odisha, authorities evacuated 5.8 lakh people to safety and deployed 385 rescue teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), and other state forces. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reported the evacuation of over 2.43 lakh people. Both states saw precautionary measures like the cancellation of over 400 trains and the suspension of flights. However, flight operations resumed at Bhubaneswar's Biju Patnaik International Airport and Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 8 AM after the cyclone passed.

The Odisha government, led by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, has mobilized 150 platoons of police for rescue and relief operations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached out to assess the state's preparedness. Both Odisha and West Bengal remain on high alert as Cyclone Dana continues to move inland.

The IMD warned of scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha, including Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj. West Bengal also experienced heavy downpours, with the cyclone affecting East Midnapore and Howrah. Authorities have asked the public to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols to minimize the impact.

The coastal areas of both states are now focusing on relief efforts, and authorities are monitoring the situation closely. The storm is expected to weaken as it continues its path across northern Odisha, with flash floods predicted in low-lying areas.
