Heavy rainfall has severely impacted Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, resulting in at least 10 fatalities, extensive flooding, and significant disruptions to road and rail traffic. On September 1, heavy rains caused the railway track near Intakanne station in Telangana's Mahabubabad district to be washed away, leading to the cancellation and diversion of several long-distance trains. In response to the flooding, 26 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed across both states for relief and rescue operations. These teams are equipped with inflatable boats, pole and tree cutters, and essential medical aid supplies. Rivers in both states are overflowing, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents from affected areas to relief camps. Telangana's Information and Public Relations Minister, Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, announced the closure of all schools, including private institutions, in Hyderabad and surrounding areas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured support from the central government to the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, N Chandrababu Naidu and A Revanth Reddy, respectively. Naidu reported that 110 boats are actively providing food and medical assistance, urging residents to stay calm. The torrential rains, attributed to a depression, have continued for two consecutive days, causing widespread flooding and waterlogging. Vijayawada district in Andhra Pradesh has been particularly hard hit, with many residents stranded in their homes and vehicles submerged. The South Central Railway has faced severe disruptions, with 140 trains cancelled and 97 diverted on September 1. On September 2, an additional six trains were cancelled due to flooding. The railway stations at Rayanapadu, Kondapalli, Tenali, Vijayawada, Nidubrolu, and Bapatla have provided food and water to stranded passengers. Buses have been arranged to transport passengers from affected areas. Telangana’s Suryapeta SP Sunpreet Singh advised travelers to Vijayawada and Khammam to postpone their journeys due to dangerous road conditions, including overflowing rivers and waterlogged highways.
