Headmaster Arrives Drunk to Hoist Flag on Republic Day, Claims Drinking is a “Necessity”

In a shocking incident from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where prohibition is in place, a government school headmaster arrived at the school under the influence of alcohol to hoist the national flag on Republic Day.
A video of the event has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage. The incident occurred at the Rajkiya Madhya Vidyalaya in Dharmapur Purvi, Minapur block.
On January 26, headmaster Sanjay Kumar Singh, who has been serving in the school for 3–4 years, arrived visibly intoxicated for the flag-hoisting ceremony.
He was so inebriated that he struggled to speak and couldn’t stand steadily, leaving students and villagers in shock. When questioned by locals about his drinking habits, the headmaster responded, "No, I don’t drink regularly. It’s out of compulsion. I haven’t been paid for five months. The school’s midday meal scheme is suspended. How am I supposed to survive and run the school?"
When further asked how he managed to buy alcohol, he replied, "Sometimes people offer me a drink. I have no money. My salary has been delayed for five months."
The incident drew immediate attention as locals informed the police. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that Sanjay Kumar Singh had consumed alcohol. Subsequently, the police arrested the headmaster, and further legal action is underway.
This incident highlights yet another failure in enforcing Bihar’s liquor ban and raises serious questions about the functioning of government schools and the struggles of educators in the state.
