Gulab Chand Kataria new Punjab Guv, President accepts Purohit resignation

President

Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria was appointed as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, replacing Banwarilal Purohit, whose resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu. This was announced in an official communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhawan. In addition to Kataria's new role, President Murmu reshuffled three governors and appointed seven others.

Banwarilal Purohit resigned as Punjab Governor and Administrator of Chandigarh in February, citing personal reasons. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation on Saturday and announced new appointments for governors in other states.

Purohit, 83, stepped down in February, stating personal reasons and other commitments in a brief letter to the President of India. He wrote, “Due to personal reasons and certain other commitments, I tender my resignation from the post of Governor and Administrator of UT Chandigarh. Please accept the same and oblige.” Chandigarh is the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana.

Purohit became the Governor of Punjab in September 2021 after serving four years as Tamil Nadu Governor. His tenure in Punjab was marked by frequent conflicts with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, especially regarding the Punjab Raj Bhawan's pending approval of various legislations.

Whenever Governor Purohit raised concerns or sought explanations, the AAP, including the chief minister, cabinet ministers, and official spokespersons, responded strongly, often accusing Purohit of being influenced by the BJP and conspiring against their government.
