The grand opening of Karachi’s Dream Bazaar Mall turned into mayhem when an uncontrolled crowd stormed the venue, leading to significant vandalism and looting. The mall, developed by a Pakistani businessman living abroad and heavily promoted on social media, was expected to draw large crowds with its special opening day discounts, as reported by ARY News.

Shortly after the mall opened its doors at 3:00 pm, an overwhelming surge of people entered the mall, quickly spiraling out of control. Videos circulating online depict hundreds of individuals flooding into the mall in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Johar area, resulting in widespread property damage and theft. Despite staff efforts to manage the crowd, the scene quickly devolved into chaos as people vandalized shops, stole merchandise, and left the store in disarray.

Eyewitnesses noted a conspicuous absence of police presence during the disturbance, with many capturing footage of the destruction and looting. The mall was left in ruins, with clothes strewn across the floor and broken glass everywhere. Videos showed looters proudly documenting their actions on their phones.

The incident has sparked intense debate online, with many users expressing shock and disappointment. One user remarked, “What else can you expect from a place where lawlessness prevails? Even a generous act can turn into chaos.” Another commented, “It’s disheartening to see such a promising event end in such devastation. Better planning and security measures were clearly needed.”

The Dream Bazaar Mall’s opening, which was supposed to showcase affordable items starting at PKR 50, ended in violence and destruction. Marketed as Pakistan’s first mega thrift store, the event attracted thousands, but management’s attempt to close the doors to control the crowd only led to further damage as individuals forcibly broke through.

City traffic came to a halt as thousands remained stranded outside, and reports of extensive property damage emerged. Some claimed a lack of police presence, while others reported police aggression towards bystanders. The chaos unfolded in less than half an hour, with the mall cleared out by 3:30 pm.

One devastated employee expressed frustration, saying, “We aimed to benefit Karachi’s people, but instead of a smooth opening, we encountered chaos. This is what happens when investments come to Karachi.”\
