Government Increases Minimum Wage Rates for Workers, heres all you need to know
The central government has announced an increase in minimum wage rates through a revision of the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), aiming to support workers, especially in the unorganised sector, amid rising living costs. This new wage structure will come into effect from October 1, 2024.
The revised rates apply to workers in various sectors, including construction, loading and unloading, housekeeping, cleaning, mining, and agriculture, under central sphere establishments. Wages are divided by skill level — unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled — and further differentiated by geographic regions, designated as areas A, B, and C.
For example, in Area "A," unskilled workers in sectors like construction and cleaning will now earn Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month), while semi-skilled workers will receive Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month). Skilled and clerical workers will earn Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month), and highly skilled workers, as well as armed security personnel, will receive Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month).
This is the second wage adjustment for 2024, following a previous update in April. The VDA is reviewed biannually, in April and October, based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers.
