Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team

Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, succeeding Rahul Dravid following India's victorious T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The announcement was made by BCCI secretary Jay Shah through X (formerly Twitter).

"India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I’m honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true!" Gambhir wrote on X.

Gambhir, renowned for his pivotal roles in India's ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2007 and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2011 triumphs, as well as his leadership with Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, steps into a team that is already at the pinnacle of international cricket. His first task will be overseeing a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, encompassing three ODIs and three T20Is later this month.

Taking charge amidst a packed international schedule across formats, Gambhir faces distinct challenges in each arena.

In Test cricket, despite India's recent dominance, they are not currently leading the ICC Men's Test Team Rankings. Following a convincing series win against England, India tops the ICC World Test Championship standings with six wins in nine Tests this cycle. However, a demanding tour of Australia looms large, where Pat Cummins' side has proven formidable.

In ODIs and T20Is, Gambhir inherits a team eager to reclaim past glory. India last clinched an ICC title in the T20 format in 2013 and will be aiming to change that narrative, starting with the Champions Trophy next year and culminating in the Cricket World Cup three years later. Amidst this pursuit, Gambhir will oversee a transition phase, preparing the team for new leadership and integrating emerging talents.

With a decorated playing career behind him, Gambhir's leadership as head coach marks a new chapter for Indian cricket, blending his experience of big-game temperament with the challenge of sustaining and elevating India's global standing across all formats.
