Five Journalists Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Gaza Media Vehicle

Gaza City – Five journalists were killed in an overnight Israeli airstrike that struck their vehicle parked near Al-Awda Hospital in central Gaza, according to hospital authorities and their news outlet, Al-Quds Today Television. The Gaza-based channel, affiliated with the Palestine Islamic Jihad militant group, condemned the attack, calling it a violation of journalistic and humanitarian duties.
Journalists Targeted
The victims—Ayman Al-Jadi, Faisal Abu Al-Qumsan, Mohammed Al-Lada’a, Ibrahim Al-Sheikh Ali, and Fadi Hassouna—were reportedly sleeping inside the marked media van when the strike occurred. Footage of the aftermath showed the vehicle engulfed in flames, with the words "TV" and "PRESS" clearly visible on its back doors.
Israeli Military Response
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed conducting the airstrike, stating it targeted an "Islamic Jihad terrorist cell in the area of Nuseirat." However, no evidence was provided to substantiate the claim that the journalists were involved in militant activities.
Rising Toll on Journalists
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reports that this is part of an ongoing trend of escalating violence against media workers in the region. Since October 7 of the previous year, at least 141 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza, the West Bank, Israel, and Lebanon, marking this as the deadliest period for journalists since CPJ began its documentation in 1992.
Of those killed, 133 were Palestinians in Gaza, who face heightened risks while covering the ongoing conflict. Earlier this month, an Al Jazeera photojournalist, Ahmad Al-Louh, was killed alongside four others in a strike targeting a Civil Defense office in Gaza’s Nuseirat Camp area.
Condemnation of the Attack
Al-Quds Today Television called the deaths an assault on press freedom, highlighting the dangers journalists face in conflict zones. Palestinian media also reported that the vehicle was clearly marked as a media van and was used for reporting from the hospital and the surrounding Nuseirat Camp. International press organizations, including CPJ, have raised alarms over the risks faced by journalists in Gaza, urging all parties to ensure the safety of media workers.
Humanitarian Impact
In addition to the journalists, the airstrikes resulted in at least 10 fatalities and over 20 injuries in central Gaza, according to health authorities. The incident underscores the severe humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict, with media workers increasingly caught in the crossfire.
This latest strike intensifies scrutiny over the targeting of journalists and humanitarian workers in conflict zones, raising urgent questions about accountability and the protection of press freedom amid escalating violence.
