A Bengaluru court has ordered the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, following allegations of extortion linked to the now-defunct electoral bonds scheme. The complaint was filed by Adarsh Iyer, Co-President of the Janaadhikara Sangharsha Sanghatane, who accused Sitharaman and others of using intimidation to extort funds through these bonds.

The Special Court for People's Representatives in Bengaluru mandated that the Tilak Nagar police register the FIR. This development comes after the Supreme Court deemed the electoral bonds scheme unconstitutional earlier this year, asserting that it infringed upon citizens' right to information. The scheme, introduced in 2018, aimed to enhance transparency in political funding by replacing cash donations to political parties.

In response to the court's ruling, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called for Sitharaman's resignation, questioning her position as a Union Minister amid the allegations. He emphasized that under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, an investigation must be concluded within three months, and a report submitted accordingly.

Siddaramaiah also highlighted that he himself is under scrutiny related to another case involving potential irregularities. He further demanded resignations from other political figures implicated in corruption allegations, including JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The case is set for a hearing on October 10, as the legal proceedings continue to unfold amidst significant political implications for those involved.
