Escalation of Violence in Manipur: CM Biren Singh's Residence Attacked by Protesters
In a fresh outbreak of violence, protesters in Manipur attacked Chief Minister N. Biren Singh's residence on Saturday evening. The attack follows the discovery of six bodies, including an eight-month-old infant, in Jiribam district, escalating tensions in the violence-hit state. Protesters also targeted the homes of three ministers and six MLAs, torching properties and ransacking residences, including that of the Chief Minister's son-in-law. Security forces responded with tear gas to disperse the mob in various parts of Imphal.
Tragic Discovery Sparks Outrage
The unrest began after the bodies of two women and a child, missing since Monday from a camp for displaced individuals, were recovered from the Barak River on Saturday. Three more bodies, including a woman and two children, were discovered the previous night. The tragedy comes in the wake of ongoing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which has plagued the region since May 2023, leaving over 250 dead and displacing 60,000 people.
Government Imposes Curfew, Suspends Internet
In response to the escalating violence, the government reimposed curfews in five districts, including Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching. Internet services were also suspended indefinitely to curb the spread of misinformation. The state declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Saturday to ensure safety.
Attacks on Public Officials
Among the targeted officials were Health Minister Sapam Ranjan, Consumer Affairs Minister L. Susindro Singh, and Public Distribution Minister Y. Khemchand. Protesters stormed their residences, demanding justice for the victims. In one instance, a mob gathered outside the home of BJP MLA RK Imo, Chief Minister Biren Singh’s son-in-law, urging authorities to arrest the perpetrators within 24 hours.
Armed Forces Act Reimposed Amid Tensions
The central government reintroduced the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in certain police station limits across the state, including Jiribam, Lamlai, and Moirang. The controversial law, which grants extensive powers to security forces, aims to restore order in the region.
Ethnic Divisions Deepen
Manipur remains divided along ethnic lines, with the Meitei community controlling the valley and the Kuki community dominating the hills. The recent surge in violence highlights the government’s struggle to address the deep-rooted ethnic and communal tensions that have long plagued the state.
Calls for Justice and Accountability
Public outrage has been fueled by the perceived inaction of the government in addressing the violence and ensuring justice for the victims. Demonstrators have demanded stronger measures to protect civilians and punish those responsible for the recent killings.
The situation in Manipur continues to remain volatile, with the government promising firm action and deploying additional security forces to prevent further unrest. However, the escalating ethnic divisions and lack of trust in authorities underline the challenges in restoring peace to the state.
