Ahead of bringing a law to ban polygamy in the state, Assam government has reminded its over four lakh employees of a rule set more than half a century back that they cannot enter into a second marriage if the spouse is still alive without the government’s approval even if bigamy is permitted under the employee’s personal laws.
The state government said that government employees can’t enter into a second marriage without its permission, even if under employee’s personal law bigamy is permitted.
The rule is applicable to female employees with living spouse as well. The order was issued back on Oct 20 itself.
