'Emergency' trailer out, Kangana Ranaut plays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, watch here

Actress and Parliamentarian Kangana Ranaut has released the trailer for her highly anticipated directorial debut, Emergency. The film explores a range of significant topics, including the Emergency period, the Shimla Agreement between India and Pakistan, the rise of the Khalistan movement, and the JP Andolan. Kangana not only directs and produces the film but also stars as Indira Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister who imposed the Emergency in 1975. The cast also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Mahima Choudhry, and the late actor Satish Kaushik.

Kangana Ranaut promoted the trailer with a message: “INDIA is INDIRA & INDIRA is INDIA!!! The Most Powerful Woman in the History of the country, The Darkest Chapter She Wrote in its History! Witness ambition collide with tyranny. #EmergencyTrailer Out Now! #KanganaRanaut’s #Emergency Unfolds In cinemas worldwide on 6th September.” Following its release, the trailer garnered enthusiastic reactions from viewers on social media, with comments praising Kangana's performance and predicting award nominations.

In addition to her film career, Kangana recently secured a significant political victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, winning the Mandi seat in Himachal Pradesh by a margin of over 55,000 votes on a BJP ticket. She has expressed her gratitude to the voters and reaffirmed her commitment to serving her home state.

The trailer provides a glimpse into Indira Gandhi's early political life, her relationship with her father, the late PM Jawaharlal Nehru, and her handling of various political crises throughout her career. It portrays her life as a "Shakespearean tragedy."

Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, *Emergency* is set against one of India's most tumultuous political periods. The film aims to capture a crucial chapter in Indian history with a screenplay and dialogues by Ritesh Shah and music by Sanchit Balhara. The trailer, shared by Kangana on Instagram, has generated significant buzz for its dramatic depiction of historical events. 

The film stars Kangana as Indira Gandhi, with Shreyas Talpade portraying Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram.
