ED Yet Again Questioned Former Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma, Son in ₹2,000 Crore Liquor Scam Case

Kawasi Lakhma

Raipur: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted an eight-hour-long interrogation of former Chhattisgarh Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma and his son Harish Lakhma on Tuesday in connection with the high-profile ₹2,000 crore liquor scam case.

The questioning took place at the ED's regional office located at Pachpedi Naka, Pujari Chambers, in Raipur. After the session, Lakhma addressed the media, clarifying that the ED officials treated him respectfully during the interrogation.

"There was no mistreatment. Unlike others who claim harassment by the ED, my experience has been different," Lakhma said. He mentioned that the officials even offered him water during the session.

Lakhma revealed that his mobile phone was subsequently sealed, which caused some delays in the process.

"Targeted for Being a Tribal Leader": Lakhma

Kawasi Lakhma accused the government of targeting him unfairly and described the ED's actions as part of a political conspiracy. "I am being harassed repeatedly. I don’t understand why a tribal leader is being singled out," he said. Lakhma alleged that his outspoken advocacy for Bastar's issues in the assembly has made him a target.

"This is an attempt to suppress the voices of Bastar’s people," he added, asserting that the responsibility for any illicit liquor production lies with officials or companies involved.

The former minister linked the ED's actions to the ongoing municipal and panchayat elections, calling it political retaliation. However, he reaffirmed his trust in the judicial system, stating, "I follow Gandhian principles. Truth may face challenges, but it cannot be defeated. I will continue fighting as long as necessary."

Lakhma confirmed that the ED has summoned him again on January 15. This time, he plans to bring his lawyer or auditor along and present additional documents to support his case. The case remains under investigation, with Lakhma emphasizing his innocence and determination to defend himself against what he perceives as politically motivated allegations.
