ECI to announce poll schedule today, heres all you need to know about J&K election
The Election Commission aims to conduct Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir before September 30, as mandated by the Supreme Court. The Union Territory has been operating without an elected government since 2018.
The last Assembly elections in J&K were held in 2014. In 2019, the Modi administration reorganized the former state into two Union Territories: Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The special status granted under Article 370 was revoked, and since then, the Union Territory has been administered by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
The Election Commission recently visited Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Haryana, to review election preparations, though it has not yet traveled to Maharashtra. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar assured last week that the Commission is "committed" to holding elections in J&K as soon as possible. He also expressed confidence that the people of the Union Territory will respond effectively to "disruptive forces."
To facilitate the electoral process, the Election Commission has invited non-recognized but registered parties to apply for election symbols.
With this, Jammu and Kashmir is set to receive an elected government soon. The Election Commission is highly encouraged by the increased voter participation in the Lok Sabha elections, and is preparing to conduct the Assembly elections ahead of the Supreme Court’s deadline of September 30.
For the first time in ten years, Assembly elections will be held in the region. This time, the circumstances are somewhat different as Jammu and Kashmir is now a Union Territory.
Following the recent delimitation, the number of Assembly seats in the region has increased to 90. Notably, for the first time in its history, 9 seats have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes and there is also reservation for Scheduled Castes. The new Assembly will see an increase in the number of women representatives.
The number of seats in Jammu has risen from 37 to 46, while in Kashmir, it has increased from 46 to 47. Additionally, 24 seats will be allocated for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). The total number of seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has grown from 107 to 114. The number of nominated members has increased from two to five, and two seats have been reserved for displaced Kashmiris.
