Eastern Railway's Sealdah Division Prepares for Cyclone Dana, many trains cancelled

Emergency measures by Eastern Railway's Sealdah division in preparation for Cyclone Dana, including staffing emergency control, setting up pumps, and cancelling over 200 trains to ensure passenger safety.

Cyclone Dana

As Cyclone 'Dana' intensifies, the Sealdah division of the Eastern Railway, which operates a rail network near coastal regions, is implementing precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains and storms.

In response to the cyclone's approach, the division has announced that emergency control will be staffed by officers on duty from October 24 to 25. Critical locations are being equipped with pumps to manage potential waterlogging. Additionally, diesel generators and emergency lighting are being set up at major stations, particularly in Sealdah and Kolkata, while plastic sheets are being procured to protect platform structures and concourse areas from severe storm damage.

Staff from the engineering and signal and telecom departments will be stationed at crucial sites, including Namkhana, Diamond Harbour, and Hasnabad, to address any emergencies that may arise. Tower wagons are on standby with trained personnel ready to respond to any issues with overhead wires.

Recognizing that drivers in transit are vital sources of information, the division is emphasizing the importance of keeping them alert. Diesel locomotives and crews will be stationed at key points such as Sealdah, Dum Dum, Barasat, Naihati, and Ranaghat by Thursday. Furthermore, rakes will be securely stabled to minimize the adverse effects of cyclonic winds.

To ensure passenger safety and awareness, public announcements will be made at all stations regarding any service disruptions. Advertisement boards and hoardings will be temporarily removed to reduce potential hazards during the storm.

The Eastern Railway has also committed to deploying security personnel around the clock throughout the division to maintain safety and order.

Cyclone Dana, which is expected to hit the northern regions of Odisha and West Bengal, is gaining strength. The India Meteorological Department reported that the depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwest at a speed of 6 km/h and is forecasted to develop into a cyclonic storm by Wednesday morning. The storm is anticipated to cross the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal between Puri and Sagar Island during the night of October 24 and into the morning of October 25, bringing wind speeds of 100-110 km/h.

Due to the cyclone, Indian Railways has canceled over 200 trains, affecting routes from Delhi to Bihar, Odisha, and West Bengal. In Odisha, authorities are on high alert, having decided to close educational institutions in sensitive areas. Plans are underway to evacuate more than one million residents from 3,000 villages across 14 districts, as Cyclone Dana poses a significant threat to half the state's population.
