Driver arrested after SUV runs over sleeping men, one dead
A 36-year-old man lost his life, and another suffered severe injuries after a speeding car ran over them while they were sleeping at Versova beach in Mumbai, police reported.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of August 12, when Ganesh Yadav, a rickshaw driver, and Bablu Srivastava were sleeping on the beach to escape the city's hot and humid weather. According to police, Bablu Srivastava was suddenly jolted awake by a blunt impact to his head and hand. When he regained awareness, he saw a car running over Ganesh, who was sleeping beside him.
Srivastava sustained serious injuries to his head and face, leaving him unconscious. The car's driver and his friend initially exited the vehicle, but upon realizing the severity of the situation, they fled the scene as a crowd began to gather, police said.
Both men were later rushed to Cooper Hospital, where Ganesh Yadav succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The police have since registered a case against the car's driver, Nikhil Jawle (34), and his friend, Shubham Dongre (33). They have been arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
