Bastar

Raipur, November 15, 2024 – Dhudmaras, a quaint village nestled in Bastar's Kanger Valley National Park, has gained international acclaim by being selected for the United Nations World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) Best Tourism Village Upgradation Program. Out of entries from 60 countries, Dhudmaras is among the top 20 villages chosen, signifying its immense potential in sustainable tourism development.

A Landmark Achievement

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai extended heartfelt congratulations to the Tourism and Forest Departments, Bastar District Administration, and the residents of Dhudmaras for their pivotal role in this achievement. He acknowledged the local communities for preserving their traditional knowledge, cultural heritage, and natural resources, which have transformed Dhudmaras into a globally recognized tourist destination.

The village is celebrated for its natural beauty, rich biodiversity, and vibrant tribal culture. Visitors are captivated by its unique blend of traditional lifestyles, local cuisine, and scenic landscapes, making it a favorite spot for eco-tourism enthusiasts.

Boost from UNWTO’s Program

As part of the UNWTO initiative, Dhudmaras will receive strategic support to upgrade its tourism infrastructure, preserve cultural heritage, and improve the quality of life for its residents. This recognition follows Dhudmaras’ and Chitrakot village’s Best Tourism Village Award by India’s Ministry of Tourism on World Tourism Day (September 27, 2024).

Community-Centric Eco-Tourism

Nestled amid lush forests and the serene Kanger River, Dhudmaras is an ideal eco-tourism destination. Local residents actively contribute to its development by offering homestays, serving as guides, and sharing their customs with tourists. The village youth play an integral role, showcasing the region's natural and cultural wealth while creating a sustainable source of income.

In collaboration with the Eco-Tourism Development Committee, neighboring villages such as Nagalsar and Netanar have introduced kayaking, bamboo rafting, and trekking activities, further enriching the tourist experience. Revenues generated through these initiatives are reinvested to improve basic amenities like restrooms and waiting areas for visitors.

Government Support and Sustainability

The Chhattisgarh government has prioritized road and transport improvements to boost connectivity to Dhudmaras. Local handicrafts are being promoted in global markets, creating avenues for economic growth. The Tourism and Forest Departments have empowered members of the Dhurwa Tribe with training to conduct adventure activities, ensuring a steady livelihood while preserving their traditions.

A Model for Rural Development

Dhudmaras exemplifies the power of community participation and government collaboration in driving economic growth while conserving cultural heritage. The village has become a beacon of hope for other rural communities in Bastar, showcasing the potential of eco-tourism as a sustainable development tool.

Transformative Impact

The introduction of tourism in Dhudmaras has brought profound changes to the lives of villagers:

  • Employment Opportunities: Local youth now earn livelihoods through homestays, guiding services, and adventure tourism, steering clear of migration and insurgent activities.
  • Sustainability Practices: Use of bamboo rafts, mud houses, and eco-friendly operations reinforces Dhudmaras as a hub of responsible tourism.
  • Preservation of Traditions: Tourists are welcomed to experience tribal customs, festivals, and cuisine, fostering cross-cultural connections.

Testimonials

A young villager, Mansingh Baghel, shared, “Homestays have provided employment to many people. Visitors enjoy cooking, trekking, camping, and birdwatching experiences.”

Tourist Vidya from Bengaluru remarked, “Staying with the Dhurwa community was an unforgettable experience. The hospitality and local cuisine made it truly special.”

Curbing Migration and Insurgency

The initiatives have provided sustainable livelihoods, reducing migration and deterring youth from joining insurgent movements. Self-Help Group member Mangaldevi Baghel stated, “Earlier, lack of employment forced us to migrate. Now, we lead a decent life working locally.”

Dhudmaras’ recognition as a global tourism hub highlights the success of combining community-driven efforts with government support. The village serves as a model for sustainable tourism, showcasing how eco-tourism can empower rural communities while preserving their unique heritage.

This milestone sets the stage for Bastar to emerge as a globally acclaimed destination, bringing economic and cultural prosperity to the region.
