Devendra Fadnavis Named BJP Legislative Party Leader, Poised to Return as Maharashtra CM
In a key decision following the BJP's resounding victory in the recent Maharashtra assembly elections, Devendra Fadnavis has been named the party’s Legislative Party Leader, bringing him closer to reclaiming the Chief Minister's chair.
BJP’s Plan for Leadership
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani were appointed as central observers for the BJP legislature party meeting.
While no formal announcement has been made, senior BJP leaders have confirmed Fadnavis’ selection as the Chief Minister.
The oath-taking ceremony is scheduled for December 5 at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key leaders expected to attend.
BJP’s Victory in the Assembly Elections
The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance secured an overwhelming majority, winning 230 out of 288 seats in the Maharashtra assembly polls:
BJP: 132 seats
Shiv Sena: 57 seats
NCP: 41 seats
This decisive mandate paved the way for the BJP to appoint its own Chief Minister, replacing the caretaker CM, Eknath Shinde.
Reports suggested Shinde expressed displeasure over not being considered for another term as Chief Minister, retreating to his village in Satara. However, he attributed his absence to needing rest after an intense election campaign.
What’s Next?
With Fadnavis’ appointment, the BJP is set to lead the government in Maharashtra, promising a new chapter in the state’s political landscape. The official announcement and cabinet formation are expected soon, signaling a significant step forward for the party in consolidating its leadership in the state.
