Devendra Fadnavis

In a decisive turn of events, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis met outgoing Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday evening to resolve the deadlock over government formation within the Mahayuti alliance. After prolonged negotiations, it has been decided that Fadnavis will return as Chief Minister, while Shinde and Ajit Pawar of the NCP will serve as Deputy Chief Ministers. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for December 5, 2024, at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders are expected to attend the high-profile event.

Key Developments in the Mahayuti Power-Sharing Formula

Fadnavis to Lead the Government Devendra Fadnavis is poised to be sworn in as Chief Minister, marking his return to the top post after previously leading the state for two terms.

Shinde Agrees to Deputy Role Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, who led the state government for two years, has agreed to step down from the Chief Minister's role and accept the Deputy Chief Minister position. This marks a shift in Shinde’s stance, as he had previously resisted a subordinate role under Fadnavis.

Ajit Pawar as Co-Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, representing the NCP faction, is set to retain his position as Deputy Chief Minister, continuing the 1+2 leadership formula established in the previous administration.

Cabinet Portfolio Allocation BJP: Expected to secure 21-22 ministries, including key portfolios such as Home and Revenue, along with retaining the Speaker and Legislative Council Chairman roles. Shiv Sena: Likely to receive 12 ministries, including the coveted Urban Development portfolio. NCP: Expected to hold 9-10 ministries, including Finance and the Deputy Speaker role.

Key Meetings and Reactions

Shinde’s Meeting with Fadnavis: This was the first face-to-face discussion between the two leaders since the impasse began. Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat confirmed that “all issues have been resolved,” paving the way for a smooth swearing-in ceremony.

BJP Legislative Party Meeting: BJP legislators are set to meet on Wednesday morning to formally elect their legislature party leader, likely confirming Fadnavis as the next Chief Minister.

Health Concerns Addressed: Shinde, who recently underwent medical tests in Thane for a throat infection, assured reporters that he is fine and ready to lead discussions on cabinet finalizations.

Backdrop and Challenges Last week, Shinde’s sudden departure to his hometown in Satara amid ongoing talks in Delhi raised concerns about a rift within the Mahayuti alliance. Shinde had initially expressed reluctance to relinquish his Chief Ministerial post, citing his leadership during the elections. However, after discussions with BJP leaders and Prime Minister Modi, Shinde reportedly agreed to step aside for the sake of alliance unity.

Sena leader Deepak Kesarkar emphasized the importance of maintaining Shinde’s stature, stating that the elections were fought under his leadership.

The December 5 oath-taking ceremony will signal a fresh start for the Mahayuti alliance under the leadership of Fadnavis, with Shinde and Pawar as key deputies. The new government will face the immediate challenge of balancing diverse alliance interests while focusing on delivering its governance agenda. Preparations for the event are in full swing, with political observers closely watching how this coalition government navigates its next phase in Maharashtra’s dynamic political landscape.
