Derogatory remark against woman candidate, plaint filed in ECI, NCW takes cognisance

BJP leader Shishir Bajoria has filed complaint against Abhishek Banerjee, General Secretary of ruling Trinamool Congress, for making misogynistic and derogatory remarks against Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury, MLA and BJP candidate from the 8 Maldaha Dakshin.

It has been alleged in the complaint that Abhishek Banerjee referred to Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhury as ‘Behaya’, which if translated into simple English would mean ‘shameless’ but when used against women has a very negative sexist undertone.

National Commission for Women has also taken cognisance of a Twitter post dated April 24, 2024, wherein TMC party leader Mr. Abhishek Banerjee from Malda Dakshin Constituency made derogatory remarks towards Ms. Sreerupa Mitra Chaudhary, known as Nirbhoy Didi, for her initiative in establishing Nirbhoy Gram in Malda.

“Such remarks not only undermine efforts for women’s safety but also perpetuate disrespect for women’s rights. The Commission condemns this verbal assault and NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma has written a letter to the DGP of the state to submit action taken report within four days”, it was said.
