Two junior ministers, Malsha Shareef and Mariyam Shiuna, who were suspended in January for making derogatory comments about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have resigned from the Maldivian government. Their resignation comes over nine months after their suspension from their roles as Deputy Ministers in the Ministry of Youth. Both ministers have chosen to keep the reasons for their resignation private, according to a report by edition.mv on Monday.

Interestingly, their resignation coincided with the Maldivian government’s announcement that President Mohamed Muizzu would be making an official visit to India "very soon." Heena Waleed, the chief spokesperson for the President’s Office, stated that while the exact date has not been finalized, discussions are ongoing to set a mutually convenient time for the leaders of both nations.

At least three Maldivian deputy ministers had made controversial remarks about India and Prime Minister Modi on social media, criticizing India's plans to expand tourism in Lakshadweep. This sparked outrage in India, leading to thousands of tourists canceling their trips to the Maldives, causing significant losses to the tourism-dependent country. The Maldivian Foreign Ministry later clarified that these comments did not reflect the views of the government.

The Maldives, a key maritime neighbor of India, has seen its bilateral relations, particularly in defense and security, improve under former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.
