Delhi suffers ‘poor’ air quality, local govt blames diesel buses from neighbouring states, Punjab clarifies situation

Punjab government has claimed that the number of paddy straw burning incidents have reduced from 5798 to 2704, which is 53% reduction in the number of fire incidents between 15th Sept 2023 to 25th Oct 2023 as compared to the number of such incidents between 15th Sept 2022 to 25th Oct 2022.

This clarification comes amid worsening air quality in Delhi which  suffers in winter season due to stubble burning incidents from Punjab and Haryana states. Politics has begun on the issue of worsening air quality in Delhi as BJP is now blaming the AAP government in Punjab for failing to tackle the menace of stubble burning which is why the Delhi people are suffering.

AAP leader and Delhi Minister Gopal Rai told media, “There is already a possibility of spike in air quality index during the winters. However, the AQI in Delhi as of now is around 250. Regarding the AQI at Anand Vihar, all the buses running in Delhi are CNG but the buses coming from UP are the same old diesel buses, which are causing a big impact in the area. Hence, we are requesting the central government and BJP governments in UP and Haryana to only send CNG buses in Delhi, at least during the winters”.
