Delhi High Court set to announce verdict, in defamation case against Shashi Tharoor

Delhi High Court decision pending in defamation case against Shashi Tharoor over his "scorpion" remark about Prime Minister Modi.

The Delhi High Court is set to announce its decision today in a defamation case filed against Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. The case stems from Tharoor's alleged "scorpion" remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The petition was originally filed by BJP leader Rajeev Babbar in a lower court, which led Tharoor to challenge the proceedings in the High Court.

Tharoor had approached the Delhi High Court to annul a 2019 order from the trial court that had summoned him in response to Babbar's 2018 criminal defamation complaint. The High Court had previously stayed the proceedings in the lower court.

Earlier, a Delhi court had imposed a ₹5,000 fine on Tharoor for failing to appear in court. The controversy began when, at the Bangalore Literature Festival on October 28, 2018, Tharoor compared Modi to a scorpion sitting on a Shiva lingam, stating, "You cannot remove it with your hand and cannot hit it with a sandal. If you try to remove it with your hand, it will bite badly." This statement sparked significant backlash, leading Babbar to file a complaint, alleging that Tharoor's remarks were made with malicious intent, belittled Hindu deities, and were offensive.

Babbar contends that Tharoor's comments deeply upset BJP and RSS workers and attempted to tarnish Modi's image, who led the BJP to victories in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and several subsequent state elections.
