Death Sentence or Life Imprisonment for Beant Singh's Assassin? Center to Respond Soon
The central government has announced that it will file a response to Balwant Singh Rajoana's petition regarding his death sentence for the assassination of former Punjab CM Beant Singh. The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing in two weeks. Rajoana has appealed to have his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment.
In 2007, a lower court sentenced Rajoana to death. He argues that he has already served nearly 29 years in prison and that his mercy plea has been pending for 12 years. The Solicitor General, representing the Center, informed the court that the matter is with the President, and he will update the court on its status.
