Cybercriminals Pose as CBI Officers, Hold Business Couple Hostage in Digital Scam for 12 Hours
In a shocking case of cybercrime, a business couple from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, fell victim to a “digital arrest” scam orchestrated by cybercriminals posing as CBI officers. The couple was held hostage in their own home for over 12 hours before police intervention saved them from financial fraud.
The Incident
The victims, Amarjit Kaur and her husband, who run an automobile business, received a call from fraudsters claiming to be officers from the CBI. The scammers accused them of involvement in cyber fraud and money laundering, using fear tactics to manipulate the couple into compliance.
The criminals contacted the couple via WhatsApp video calls, showing fake identification and issuing threats. Paralyzed with fear, the couple refrained from answering any calls from family and friends throughout the ordeal, raising suspicion among their household members.
Timely Police Intervention
Concerned by the couple’s unusual behavior, a relative informed a family acquaintance in the police force. The police were alerted, and DSP Kiran Ahirwar, along with a team, arrived at the couple’s residence around 1 AM. Despite initial resistance from the couple to open the door, persistent efforts by the police eventually led to their rescue.
On inspecting the couple’s mobile phones, police discovered that the cybercriminals had employed sophisticated tactics to keep them under control for hours, exploiting fear and misinformation.
Police Advisory
Thanks to the vigilance of the couple’s relatives and swift police action, the fraud attempt was foiled. Additional Superintendent of Police Niranjan Sharma urged citizens to remain vigilant, stating:
"There is no such thing as 'digital arrest.' If someone contacts you via WhatsApp or other platforms, posing as an official from agencies like the CBI or ED and makes threats, do not panic. Instead, inform your family and the police immediately. Awareness is key to preventing such scams."
A Growing Concern
Despite strict measures by law enforcement, cases of cyber fraud and digital extortion continue to rise in Madhya Pradesh. Authorities are urging people to stay alert and report any suspicious activity to curb the growing menace of cybercrime. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of digital literacy and the need to question dubious claims, even when presented with a façade of authority.
