In a significant development, the CBI informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that the crime scene at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered on duty, had been tampered with. The incident, which occurred on August 9, sparked nationwide protests and strikes within the medical community. The junior doctor's body, bearing severe injury marks, was discovered in the seminar hall of the hospital's chest department.

A civic volunteer was arrested by Kolkata Police the day after the incident, and on August 13, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which commenced its probe on August 14. The CBI pointed out that the first FIR was filed only after the victim's cremation, at 11:45 PM, and noted that the crime scene had been altered by the time they took over the investigation on the fifth day.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, highlighted the delay in filing the FIR and the conflicting information given to the victim's parents, initially suggesting suicide, followed by claims of death. Friends of the deceased doctor, suspecting foul play, insisted on a videography, which further fueled suspicions.

Justice Pardiwala questioned the procedures followed by the West Bengal government, expressing dissatisfaction with the state's handling of the case. He pointed out discrepancies regarding the timing of the Unnatural Death (UD) report and criticized the conduct of a non-medical assistant superintendent involved in the case. The Supreme Court also directed the Kolkata Police officer who made the initial report of the incident to appear at the next hearing to clarify the timeline.
