Crane involved in Metro construction project, topples onto a building, watch here
On Thursday, a hydraulic crane toppled onto a building during Metro construction work in Surat’s Nana Varachha area, causing damage to the structure. Fortunately, no civilians were injured, though the crane operator sustained minor injuries. Surat Metro Rail director Prashant Kulkarni reported that the incident occurred while two cranes were being used to launch girders.
"For reasons still unknown, the boom of one crane bent and fell onto a nearby building, causing minor damage. The second crane was also affected," he explained. Additionally, some motorcycles were damaged by debris.
The cranes involved had capacities of 400 and 375 metric tonnes, respectively. Following the collapse, traffic in the area was temporarily redirected.
This incident marks the second mishap on the Surat Metro project in a month. Earlier, on July 30, a span at Saroli experienced cracking. The Surat Metro project, managed by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (GMRC), involves a joint investment from the Central and State governments amounting to Rs 12,020 crore.
Divisional Fire Officer Hardik Patel reported that while using the crane to lift an object, a part of it fell onto an unoccupied bungalow that had been sold. Patel noted that there were no injuries or casualties related to this incident.
A video of the crane collapse has circulated widely on social media, showing the crane resting on the damaged bungalow.
