CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has been placed on a ventilator at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), according to sources on Thursday night. Yechury's condition worsened, leading to his immediate transfer to the ventilator. He has been receiving treatment for a lung infection at AIIMS since his admission on August 19.

The 72-year-old Yechury was initially admitted to the emergency ward before being moved to the intensive care unit (ICU), where he remains under the care of a team of specialist doctors. The hospital has not disclosed the specific details of his illness, though it is described as a pneumonia-like infection. Yechury had recently undergone cataract surgery prior to his current health issues.

On August 31, the CPI(M) issued a statement confirming that Yechury is still being treated at AIIMS for a respiratory infection. The party reiterated that he is receiving care from specialist doctors.
