Court dismisses Prime Minister, over appointment in cabinet

Prime Minister

In a major decision on Wednesday, Thailand's Constitutional Court dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for appointing a former lawyer with a criminal record to his cabinet, raising concerns about further political instability and potential changes within the governing coalition. Srettha, a real estate tycoon, is now the fourth Thai prime minister in 16 years to be ousted by this court, which found that his appointment of the minister violated ethical standards outlined in the constitution.

Srettha's removal, occurring less than a year into his tenure, necessitates a parliamentary session to elect a new prime minister, adding to the ongoing uncertainty in a country plagued by coups and judicial decisions that have repeatedly destabilized its government and political parties over the past two decades.

Last week, the same court dissolved the Move Forward Party, a major opposition group, citing its campaign to reform a law on insulting the monarchy as a threat to the constitutional monarchy. The party quickly reorganized under a new name.
