Controversy Erupts at AMU Over Bangladeshi Students' Offensive Remarks Against Hindu Women and ISKCON
Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is at the center of a heated controversy after three Bangladeshi students allegedly made offensive remarks about Hindu women and criticized the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) on social media. The comments, which quickly went viral, have sparked protests from Hindu students on campus and calls for strict action against the accused.
The Controversial Posts
The Bangladeshi students, identified as Shamyul, Rifat Rehman, and Mahmood Hasan Arafat, are accused of making inflammatory statements that have been widely condemned. One student reportedly labeled ISKCON as a "radical Hindutva organization" and called for its ban, while others posted vulgar and obscene comments about Indian women. One post also mocked certain religious practices in Uttar Pradesh, further escalating tensions.
A post shared on Facebook read: "We demand that ISKCON be banned. I hope the reason is clear to everyone now. I repeat, ISKCON is a radical Hindutva organisation. We have no conflict with ordinary Hindus. Our conflict is with Radical Hindutva."
Protests and Complaints
The posts ignited protests among Hindu students at AMU, who lodged formal complaints with the university’s proctorate. Key student leaders, including Akhil Kaushal, Hitesh Mewada, Puneet, Piyush, and Rohit, have demanded immediate action against the Bangladeshi students, accusing them of promoting anti-Hindu and anti-India rhetoric.
Kaushal outlined three primary demands:
Immediate suspension of the students involved.
Deportation of the students back to Bangladesh.
Cancellation of their student visas.
The students argue that the remarks not only insult Hindu sentiments but also fuel communal tensions and violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
University’s Response
Deputy Proctor Prof. S. Nawaz Zaidi addressed the growing unrest, assuring a thorough investigation into the allegations. He emphasized that any action would be taken only after the inquiry is completed. "The university does not tolerate any behavior that disrespects another community or promotes disharmony. Appropriate steps will be taken based on the findings," he said.
Campus Tensions Escalate
The incident has sparked widespread anger, with many students and social media users condemning the posts as inflammatory and disrespectful. Protests have continued on campus, with demonstrators demanding immediate disciplinary action against the accused students.
Meanwhile, university authorities are under pressure to address the issue swiftly and prevent further escalation. The controversy has highlighted broader concerns about the behavior of international students and the need for strict guidelines to ensure respect for cultural and religious diversity on campus.
As the investigation unfolds, AMU has reiterated its commitment to maintaining harmony and ensuring justice. However, the demand for deportation and visa cancellation has raised diplomatic concerns, potentially involving Bangladeshi authorities in the resolution of the matter.
