Congress, AAP "in-principle understanding" done, deliberations commences on seat sharing arrangement

Congress and AAP, members of the INDIA bloc, are in discussions to finalize an alliance ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, focusing on seat-sharing negotiations and election strategy.

Congress

The Congress and AAP, both members of the opposition INDIA bloc, had previously teamed up for the Lok Sabha elections in regions like Haryana, Gujarat, Goa, Delhi, and Chandigarh. Now, ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, the two parties have reached an "in-principle understanding" for an alliance, according to sources.

Discussions are expected to take place between AAP MP Raghav Chadha and Congress MP KC Venugopal to finalize the terms of the alliance. This meeting is anticipated either tonight or tomorrow.

AAP has reportedly requested around 20 seats, and Congress has formed a mini-committee, including Deepak Babaria, Deepender Singh Hooda, and Ajay Maken, to handle the alliance negotiations and address internal disputes over 12 seats.

Haryana's Assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with results expected on October 8. While there were earlier indications from Congress leaders, like Kumari Selja, that the party might contest independently, recent developments suggest a potential alliance. However, seat-sharing remains a challenging issue, with AAP initially seeking 10 seats while Congress is considering offering between five and seven, with an additional seat possibly going to the Samajwadi Party.

The deadline for nominations is October 4. Discussions continue as the two parties work towards a final agreement, which could also influence future elections, including the 2025 Delhi Assembly election.
