Collector imposes fine on NMDC, worth hundreds of crores, for violations
In a major decision, the Dantewada Collector has taken significant action by issuing a notice to the NMDC Kirandul Complex on Thursday, imposing a penalty of ₹1,620 crore for irregularities in the approved mining leases. The notice, issued on August 29, requires compliance within 15 days.
In a letter to the Executive Director (ED) of NMDC, the Collector referenced mining leases for iron ore in various areas: Deposit No. 14 ML with an area of 322.368 hectares, Deposit No. 14 NMZ with an area of 506.742 hectares, and Deposit No. 11 with an area of 874.924 hectares, all located in Village Kirandul, Tehsil Bacheli, District South Bastar Dantewada. The notice highlighted that the response to this issue was unsatisfactory.
Additionally, the Collector mentioned violations of several provisions of the Chhattisgarh Minerals (Extraction, Transportation, and Storage) Rules, 2009. A total penalty of ₹1,620,49,52,482, including the market value of minerals and royalty, has been levied. The amount must be deposited within 15 days.
