CM Nitish Kumar’s Comments During 'Pragati Yatra' Spark Controversy, Opposition Criticizes

Begusarai, Bihar: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has once again stirred controversy with his remarks during his Pragati Yatra, which aims to review development projects and announce new initiatives across the state.
Speaking with Jeevika Didis (self-help group women) in Begusarai on Saturday, Kumar made comments about their attire and communication skills, leading to criticism from opposition parties, particularly the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
What Did Nitish Kumar Say?
During the interaction, CM Nitish Kumar remarked, “Earlier, girls didn’t wear good clothes. Now, they are dressed so well and speak so beautifully. They couldn’t speak like this before. It’s wonderful to see this transformation. Wherever I go, I always make it a point to meet Jeevika Didis.”
A video of his statement has gone viral on social media, with mixed reactions. While some saw it as praise for the empowerment of women under government initiatives, others found the remarks patronizing and inappropriate.
RJD Attacks Nitish Kumar
The RJD, led by Tejashwi Yadav, seized the opportunity to criticize the Chief Minister. Party spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari called the statement "ridiculous" and accused Nitish Kumar of being disconnected from reality since his alliance with the BJP.
Tejashwi Yadav shared the viral video on social media, mocking Nitish Kumar. He wrote, “Did people even have faces before 2005? Or did Nitish Kumar magically make everyone’s lives better? He seems to think the world began after he came to power.”
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav also commented, stating that Nitish Kumar is more focused on “sightseeing” than meaningful governance.
This isn’t the first time Nitish Kumar’s comments during his interactions with Jeevika Didis have caused discomfort. Earlier, during the Saran leg of his Pragati Yatra, the CM made another remark about women being the “creators of life,” which also led to awkwardness among those present, including ministers Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Samrat Choudhary.
