Amid the controversy surrounding the EVMs, Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav has made the claim that close to two lakh trees were saved.

He argued that use of ballot paper to carry out electoral exercise in a country as large as India could have cost two lakh trees or so.

It is because of EVM use that such large scale cutting of trees was saved and it obviously helped the environment.

He said that the message from EVM use is that it saves trees and thus helps the environment.
