Mungeli, Chhattisgarh: A six-member investigation team has been constituted to probe the tragic accident at the Kusum Steel Plant in Mungeli.

The team, led by Saragaon Police Station In-Charge Santosh Sharma, has been directed to complete the inquiry within 15 days.

During this period, team members have been relieved of other duties to ensure a thorough investigation.

Additionally, the police investigation will be conducted under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Navneet Patil.

Incident Overview

The incident occurred on January 9 at the Kusum Steel Plant, located on the Raipur-Bilaspur Highway in Mungeli district. A major mishap unfolded when a chimney being installed collapsed, trapping several workers underneath. The number of individuals affected by the collapse was reportedly significant, prompting immediate police action against the plant’s management.

Legal Action

Following the accident, an FIR was lodged against Plant In-Charge Amit Kedia, Operations Manager Anil Prasad, and other members of the management. The charges include negligence leading to the accident, which has raised concerns about safety standards at the facility.

Investigation Priorities

The investigation team will focus on: Determining the cause of the chimney collapse. Assessing safety measures and protocols in place at the plant. Identifying lapses in management oversight and worker safety. Recommending corrective measures to prevent future incidents.

The accident has drawn attention to industrial safety practices in the region, with calls for stricter regulations and enforcement to ensure worker welfare. The investigation report, due in 15 days, is expected to provide critical insights into the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
